Why is my site so slow to load?

Please advise, I have disabled most plugins already as I am still in the process of building the site, however the load speed is incredibly slow, over 12 seconds to load the home page. This is unacceptable, I cannot promote a site like this. Minor changes made to default theme. Hosted on Host Papa. Cache cleared.
