Email opt-out from Announcements

Hi,
In the US (and I’m sure in other places like the EU) we (legally!) require that students be able to opt-out of email announcements. So for example someone may have finished a course and no longer want the announcements to be emailed to them. I just sent out an email to multiple courses, and I get an email for every course even though it’s the same announcement. So I get the same email 7 times for a group announcement. This is going to annoy some students who are enrolled in several courses.
So when there’s a site-wide announcement, maybe only send it once? and some way for a student to unsubscribe from emails for specific courses is important. I will need to put an unsubscribe link in the footer of every email, to unsubscribe from emails in the course.
Thank you,
Crisses

You misunderstand.
I want and need to be able to send emails to my students.
My students need to be able to opt out of emails. At the foot of every mass email there needs to be an unsubscribe button that allows them to opt-out of emails. This is a legal issue, from the federal government of the USA, from the CAN-SPAM act, many years ago. It’s not new. Mass emails must provide the ability for people to unsubscribe.
Students may want 1 email. I doubt they want 5 or 10 of the same email if they sign up to other courses. So one issue is getting many emails when I send an announcement to several courses.
The other issue is that legally they need to be able to opt out of emails, whether on a class-by-class basis, or all emails altogether.

Now a student emailed back “unsubscribe” — I cannot legally send any more email announcements to my students because 1 student has “unsubscribed” — or I will be in violation of law.
So basically the “announcements” feature is now broken for me, for all my students.

No, they emailed me and put “unsubscribe” in the body of their email.
By law, I have to not send them any more emails. Which means I can’t send emails to the other 100+ people (the largest class on the site) in that course either, not through the announcements system. Because it won’t let me exclude the 1 student from announcement emails.
So I turned off the automatic emails, but I can’t send emails to that 1 student in that 1 class. Over time, though, students in other classes will unsubscribe, and a student signed up for 6 classes may want to unsubscribe from 2 of them that they have completed.
So I put up a blog article announcing that there won’t be any more site-wide email announcements, and that instructors going forward will have to be very careful about emailing students in their courses. If 1 opts out, they can’t email their class anymore. Or if a student in their class has unsubscribed from everything from the site, they can’t email their class.
— note that the thimpress email list allows unsubscribing from emails. It’s no different than if the emails come from any other email list, it has to allow people to unsubscribe.

No, the student did not cancel the course. They are still in the course. They want to unsubscribe from only the announcement email, not the course.
