Activation & Other Emails Not Sending

Hi there, the last few days, when a user signs up to the site they are not receiving any activation email to activate their account. We have found that the confirmation emails for when a user purchases a course take a considerable amount of time to come through. Is there a way to fix the activation email issue and to speed up the automated emails, I looked at SMTP plugins but wasn’t sure if they would interfere with the buddypress emails (activation).
