Change Bkgrd Image on Homepage events

Hello,
I have tried to change the background image on the homepage of my website, the one that sits behind the event feed as on the link below. I have created a test image the same size and uploaded it, but it doesn’t show and what it does is make the events feed x 3 bigger as shown.

what am i doing wrong please? I want to get my designer to create something but not sure what size/spec/how to get this to work?
