Child theme custom login popup being ignored

I have created a file in my child theme at inc/widgets-login-popup/base.php in order to customise the login popup, however the changes are ignored and the version from the parent theme is used.

The original function for the shortcode contains the following:

$widget_template       = THIM_DIR . 'inc/widgets/login-popup/tpl/base.php';
$child_widget_template = THIM_CHILD_THEME_DIR . 'inc/widgets/login-popup/base.php';
if ( file_exists( $child_widget_template ) ) {
  $widget_template = $child_widget_template;
}

This makes me think that just having the base.php file in the same folder structure within my child theme should be enough to override the parent version but this doesn’t happen. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
